Trevor's Trek!

The second annual Trevor's Trek is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2008. The walk will start at St. Luke's MSTI, Boise, Idaho. The walk will proceed down Idaho Street to Capitol ending at the steps of Boise City Hall, where a brief ceremony will conclude the walk. The race starts promptly at 11:00 AM. This is NOT a fund-raiser. Therefore, there is no registration fee.

Sometimes the greates distance traveled is accomplished in just a few steps. After Trevor Smith's surgery for brain cancer in November, 2002, at the age of thirteen he couldn't even get out of bed. When he finally took his first steps, it was with someone holding onto him. During his chemotherapy and radiation treatments he became too weak to stand up. When he took his first steps again, his balance was impaired and he had a limp (A side effect of chemotherapy). Facing a change to a new school during his treatments, he was told not to do it; the kids would laugh at him because he "walked funny." But he went to the new school anyway, deciding that if he could face up to cancer, he could face up to a few kids who might make fun of him.

Trevor Smith is a survivor. At the age of eighteen, he has become a forceful voice for the children of Idaho who are suffering from cancer. Trevor, and all the other childhood cancer patients who will be alongside him at the second annual Trevor's Trek on Saturday, September 13, 2008, invite you to: Walk a Mile in Our Shoes.

Powell's Sweet Summer Dreams Art Walk to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho

On August 23, 2008, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe will demonstrate to Idaho how “Life Happens at Powell’s” as proprietors Joe and Debbie Giordano will bring together a unique farmers market, local musicians, and artists for one day to celebrate life in Boise and to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho, where wishes are granted to hundreds of Idaho children who refuse to let sickness rob them of their dreams.

The Powell’s Sweet Summer Dreams Art Walk will open at 9 a.m. with coffee and pastries available to the public provided by local businesses as spectators stroll up and down the sidewalks on Bown Way and enjoy watching professional artists create original pieces of art at locations throughout Bown Crossing. Throughout the day, spectators can participate in an on-going silent auction to bid on each of the original pieces of artwork with all proceeds to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho. Powell’s has commissioned local artists who have donated their time and artwork for this charity benefit.

In addition to the artwork, the Powell’s Farmers Market is unique to the S.E. Boise area and will sell fruits and vegetables from local farmers, plus floral arrangements and jewelry designs featured exclusively at the Powell’s Sweet Summer Dreams Art Walk. Nationally renowned Chef Jon Mortimer will conduct special cooking demonstrations in the Powell’s Pantry, also helping to raise donations to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For children (young or old), a special art area will feature face-painting and samples of the nostalgic candies and treats that Powell’s Sweet Shoppe features to bring out the kid in everyone. Beginning at 6 p.m., 50’s style music will be featured for the “Candy Dance,” a sock-hop style public dance in Bown Crossing, with donations accepted at the entrance to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
